About 3DNeuroN

3DNeuroN was an international collaborative research project funded from the European Commission’s prestigious Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) scheme with the total budget of 4 million Euros for 1.7.2012–31.12.2014. The project was coordinated by Tampere University of Technology, Finland.

Our view is that the biological and computational biohybrid components and the concept of BIO-ICT interactions in 3D have so far lacked the complexity of the true high level biological neural systems. Our vision is that 3 key features are needed for biomimicking true biological neuronal networks:

  1. True three-dimensional (3D) structures of the neuronal cells and networks
  2. Interaction of various types of neural cells
  3. Organized 3D microstructures of neuronal-like tissues, such as layered cell structures

In 3DNeuroN, we researched, developed and tested solutions to these challenges, including:

  • 3D microelectrode arrays for electrophysiological field potential measurements of neuronal activity in 3D volumes
  • 3D neuronal cell cultures
  • Electrophysiological signal analysis methods
